Within each clip display on the timeline is a Pan-and-crop icon, with more choices available from a right-click context menu.Īudio Audio tracks are separately shown as Voice tracks, and these display the audio's waveform view.

The left side of each clip has helpful solo, mute and FX buttons. Scores of keyboard shortcuts let you perform operations quickly.

It's not very visually intuitive, even in Simple mode every other consumer editor and even the pro-level Apple Final Cut Pro X has icons that visually indicate their purposes. To get to transitions, FX, and the trimmer, you click on tabs below the source panel. There are two ways to move back and forth through your movie: Dragging the playhead simply changes its position, but dragging it with Ctrl held down scrubs (or "shuttles") through the video, with the sound playing at sped-up speed there's also a separate shuttle control at bottom left that you can speed up with an orange pointer indicator. Spinning the mouse wheel now moves the timeline back and forward instead of expanding and contracting it, as in previous versions. Like Corel VideoStudio X7, Sony Movie Studio limits you to 20 video tracks and 20 audio tracks, but really, even pros rarely need more than that, despite competing products' 100-track limits. A Help Bubbles option overlays tooltips over program elements to show you what they're for. Movie Studio's interface is pretty customizable: You can pull off and resize panels, save custom layouts, and even assign menu items to them. The touch support, however, is only partial: You can't drag transitions or work with many of the tools that you can call up in Simple mode.

You'll still want to do most work with a mouse, but it's handy to be able to tap a button now and then, especially if the cursor is far from the button you need tapped. You can even drag and hold clips to the timeline. Touch-screen support is a welcome development: You can press buttons and move sliders around with a fingertip. Nor is there any movie template feature to guide you through building a compelling video story, which other applications in its class offer. The program, even in simple mode, still lacks what all other products in the space include-a storyboard view. A new big-buttoned toolbar below the timeline does bring Studio into line with other modern consumer editors like Adobe Premiere Elements, in that it offers easy access to the tools for trimming, splitting, pan/crop, and effects. Expert view just adds items like Media Bins, Master Bus sound levels, and frame numbers. There's less to Simple mode than meets the eye, however-it's actually pretty much the same as the previous (and current Expert) view but with larger and fewer buttons. Interface The main editor interface hasn't changed much in the last few years, but version 13's new Simple Edit mode with touch-screen support is an effort in that direction. I tested the program on an MSI AG270 Gaming All-in-One.

A free trial download is available for all levels, and unlike most of the competitors, it doesn't put a watermark on videos you produce or limit project sizes. It's available in eight languages in both 32-bit and 64-bit choices. The installer is a 462MB download, par for the course for powerful video editing software, but you'll need a decent Internet connection or some time.

For this review, I tested the Platinum level on a 3.4GHz AMD Phenom II quad-core Windows 8.1 PC with 8GB DDR3 RAM and an ATI Radeon HD 4290 graphics adapter.

The software runs on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1-there's no Mac version. The first level lacks the others' 64-bit native operation and Blu-ray, 3D, stabilization, and 4K XAVC S capabilities, while the Suite adds a slew of third party video and audio effects. Starting Up In the classic "good, better, best" arrangement Movie Studio is available at three levels, with the standard Movie Studio 13 listing for $49.95, Platinum for $79.95, and Suite for $139.95.
